If you love baseball, opening day is basically a holiday. And since nothing is more American than baseball, Budweiser campaigned the White House to make it an official national holiday. Ozzie Smith pitched the idea publicly and we created the campaign hub, posters, display ads and the official petition to the White House on wethepeople.com.

The petition got more than 100,000 signatures, which earned an official response from the White House Deputy Press Secretary. It was 2014, so he reminded us the Red Sox were World Champs, Obama is a White Sox fan and — since it was spring — even his lowly Royals still had a chance to be champs. Unfortunately, they lost in the World Series that year.

"While we are sympathetic to your pitch to make Opening Day a national holiday, it's a little outside our strike zone, creating permanent federal holidays is traditionally the purview of Congress. So, it's up to the men and women on Capitol Hill to decide whether to swing at this pitch. Meanwhile, I'll spend that day visualizing what it would be like to welcome my 2014 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals to the White House. That is, after all, the best part of Opening Day: every team is tied for first place and poised to make a run at the Fall Classic.”
